757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper This year’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is just over 1 month away – February 12. Please plan accordingly to help, if in no other way than to bring friends and eat pancakes. If you would like to assist in preparing, serving, clean-up, etc. please contact the office or any one of the Vestry members as soon as you can so we can start planning in earnest.

Wednesday Night Lenten Series – As has been our habit in the past two years we will have a Lenten Series and Soup Supper for the five weeks between Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. If there is any input into what we study let the Rector know.

Rector’s Absence – The Rector will be away for Continuing Education from Jan 17 – 22 on retreat with the Society of Saint John the Evangelist in Massachusetts. In case of emergency, contact the Senior Warden. The celebrant next Sunday will be The Rev. Julia Dorsey Loomis.

OneHarvest Orders – The next distribution is on Saturday, Jan 19. Check at www.ebumc.net for the order dates. The order dates are on the Ebenezer UMC order form.

Flower Donation Sign-up Sheet – The Altar Guild has posted the flower sign-up sheet in the Narthex. Please read the sign-up instructions also posted in the Narthex. If you have any questions, please contact Lynn Rose.

Our Thanksgivings – We are collecting tangible statements regarding our blessings and thanksgivings in the jar in the Narthex.

Wednesday Morning Book Study – The Wednesday morning book study will reconvene this coming Wednesday, January 16 and will include a luncheon. When the group returns it will pick up the study of “The Bible Jesus Read” by Philip Yancy in the chapter on the Psalms. If you are interested please contact Margaret.

Formation ClassesThis coming Sunday we will discuss our Old Testament reading Isaiah 43:1-7, “Restoration and Protection Promised” from 9:15-10:15 am. Next week’s we will take a break in the Rector’s absence but will have class the following Sunday. All are invited to join us for class this Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service available during the education hour.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in unison. We will use a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 29 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 524, “I love thy kingdom Lord” (St. Thomas (Williams)) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Thought for the week – Epiphany: The Wise Men came to Jesus, and bowed down and worshiped him. And then, “they departed to their country by another way.” Yet how could they ever be the same again – for they had seen the Christ and they had believed.
-Br. Geoffrey Tristam
