757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

Christian Formation for Sunday August 5 - 2 Samuel 11:26-12:13a; Nathan Condemns David

August 5, 2012, 10 Pentecost
2 Samuel 11:26—12:13a
Nathan Condemns David
Background: The book of 2 Samuel is considered part of the Deuteronomistic history and continues developing the history of the Davidic kingship in the nation of Israel. 2 Samuel highlights the nature of the human king; faithful and fallible. The middle section of 2 Samuel deals with the development of the kingdom and David’s family. This section also provides a reflection on the fallibility of the human king.

Theme: In this section, David is called to task about his sins; adultery with Bathsheba and murder of Uriah. The prophet Nathan returns to induce David to self-convict and pronounce God’s punishment on himself. This section will set the stage for the turmoil in David’s family to come.

Questions to Ponder

* Briefly describe the social, political, and religious context of this passage.

* Why might the author refer to Bathsheba emphasizing her marriage to Uriah (the wife of Uriah… her husband…)?

* How might Bathsheba’s relational reference be a harbinger for the next statement where David “sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife”? Why might author almost appear to place the action fully on David’s shoulders and not on both he and Bathsheba?

* Why might Nathan have been as indirect as he was while accusing David? How might his indirectness be in response to David’s election as the head of the new Dynasty?

* For what reason might David say that the powerful man who stole the lamb would have to repay 4 times for his transgression? How would the repayment be affected if the repayment was corrected to be 7 times instead of 4?

* Why might God point out that David had been given “his master’s wives… the house (women) of Israel and Judah”?

* How might Nathan’s reference to “the sword” being present in David’s life be an impeachment of David’s current actions?

* What trouble from within David’s household would beset David?  How might that trouble be tied to the sword Nathan prophesies about?

* Do you think the “taking of David’s wives in the sight of the people” actually took place? What might the reference foreshadow?

* What might be important about David’s confession “I have sinned against the Lord.” in David’s continuing story?

* How might this story be applicable to us as the Episcopal Church? As St. John’s Church?

* What are the implications for us to reflect upon from this passage?

Sermon for Sunday July 29, 2012

Greetings at the end of July. It has been a busy month and a time for us to look renew friendships and our sense of ministry. Today was special because 2 families returned to worship with us after a brief time away. Many thanks to the West family and Pinner family for being with us. We were also blessed to have a couple after service visit their parents in the yard - the Woodwards.

Our sermon today looked about Jesus' presence in our life and what we are looking for each and every day. We looked at the reality that God we are looking for is the God we find in our search, even when we don't know what we are looking for. I encourage your comments.

National Night Out – This year’s National Night Out celebration will be held from 6:00-9:00 pm on August 7 at the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department. St. John’s will be an official participant in this year’s celebration and it would be good if we were able to have a contingent present for at least part of the time the celebration is happening.

Kitchen Information – A special thank you to the folks who helped clean out the refrigerator after last Sunday’s service. In order to maintain a more orderly kitchen we will routinely clean out the unlabeled items from the refrigerator. We will most likely purge the refrigerator every other Sunday. If you have items to be kept please label them so we don’t throw them away.

Diocesan Connection Newsletter - The July-August edition of the Diocesan Connection is available online at this link. If you would like a print copy please let the office or the Rector know and we’ll get one for you.

Christian Formation Offerings – In the coming months be on the lookout for new offerings for Christian Formation. In the later summer we will begin brainstorming what Christian Formation has for us and how the ministry of Formation will continue to evolve in the coming year. We will also attempt to put “flesh on the bones” of a renewed Children’s Christian Formation and the process we will employ to help our young ones to continue their growth in God’s kingdom on earth.

Formation ClassesThis coming Sunday we will discuss our Old Testament reading 2 Samuel 11:1-15, “David Commits Adultery with Bathsheba” from 9:15-10:15 am. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading 2 Samuel 11:26-12:13a, “David Has Uriah Killed.” All are invited to join us for class this Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service available during the education hour.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in unison. We will use a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 14 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 615, “Thy kingdom come!” (St. Flavian) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Pastoral Care Volunteers Needed – Have you ever wished you had someone to lend an ear or ease a burden? If so, I encourage you to consider becoming a Pastoral Care provider. There are no special skills required, simply the ability to be present with another member of our church family to ease their burdens. If you feel called to assist please contact the Rector.
We have had a little response and we request you prayerfully consider this ministry. If you have any questions about the ministry contact the Rector.

Thought for the week – Gratitude: The prayer of thanksgiving frees us from the bondage of our own too-small worlds. It lifts us beyond ourselves and our petty preoccupations. And it does not come naturally to any of us. Rather, paradoxically, like all prayer, thanksgiving is a gift, from God, for us, waiting to be received.

Christian Formation for Sunday July 29: 2 Samuel 11:1-15; David Commits Adultery with Bathsheba

July 29, 2012, 9 Pentecost
2 Samuel 11:1-15
David Commits Adultery with Bathsheba
Background: The book of 2 Samuel is considered part of the Deuteronomistic history and continues developing the history of the Davidic kingship in the nation of Israel. 2 Samuel highlights the nature of the human king; faithful and fallible. The middle section of 2 Samuel deals with the development of the kingdom and David’s family.

Theme: This passage can be placed in David’s struggle for power within the kingdom. This section helps paint a picture of David as fallible, somewhat misguided, and capable of horrible misuse of power. This passage is filled with painstaking details about David’s human fallibility and the lengths he will go to cover up his sin, even though he is God’s chosen leader of Israel.

Questions to Ponder

* Please skim Chapters 10-12 for context.

* Identify the importance and location of the Ammonites; who Uriah might be; what the lineage of Bathsheba might be; and the meaning of Uriah’s name. How might these things important to the story?

* How might the placement of David’s adultery in the midst of the story of the destruction of the Ammonites be important in the development of David in Israel’s story?

* What, if anything, do you find ironic in David’s absence from the war against the Ammonites; the Israelites besieging Rabbah; David lusting after Bathsheba; and David’s adultery with Bathsheba?

* What do you find interesting about the description of Bathsheba? How might this foreshadow the outcome of the story?

* What do you find interesting about the description of David’s location when he sees Bathsheba? Why might it be important for his location to be identified as “the roof of the king’s house” as opposed to “the roof of David’s house”?

* What do you think is the writer/editor’s intent behind emphasizing David’s kingship and Bathsheba’s womanhood?

* Why do you think David sent Uriah to “wash his feet” (have sex with Bathsheba)? Why do you think Uriah declined the direction from David?

* Do you think Uriah knew about or at least heard about David’s encounter with Bathsheba? How might that make a difference in Uriah’s response to David?

* Given Uriah’s name and his response to David, what might the writer/editor be trying to imply with regard to David and his rule over and in Israel?

* What might the writer’s intent be by placing this story of David’s fallibility in the midst of the larger story of David’s rise to power and the promise that David’s line will continue forever (if they remain faithful to God)?

* How could the church apply this potential message to its actions today?

* Can you think of any examples where Christians have perpetrated this kind of act?

* What is the implication for us today?

Sermon for Sunday July 22, 2012 - Pentecost 8

Greetings as July starts to fade. This past week was a good week and we were able to make some repairs to the driveway with the help of some friends. The repair was tested last night with the rains and everything looks good. We're coming to the "end" of the vacation season and will be returning to the regular routine. This morning's sermon broached the subject of living as a place of God that lives in the tension of life in society, the church as a place where we are recharged and visitors are warmly welcomed. I invite your comments.

St. John's e-News for Sunday July 22, 2012

Report from Bishop Hollerith from the 77th General Convention (GC77) – Bishop Holly has sent an electronic note about his impressions of GC77. If you did not receive one you can access a copy of his note at this link. In his note he included an interview specifically addressing the resolution on the blessing of same-gender, life-long covenants. As I mentioned in church last week, I intend to make a presentation on the General Convention and field questions about “what’s next.” in the very near future. Please contact me if you have any specific questions about his letter or how GC77 will affect St. John’s.

Mid-year State of Parish Finances - Since we are halfway through the year, the Vestry would like to thank you for your continued support of the ministry and mission of this Church. We would also like to provide the Parish with a mid-year review and update on the year-to-date income and expenses at St. John's.
The Vestry presented a budget with desired income and expected expenses of $104,544. We are currently behind on income and if giving continues at the same rate we should finish the year with an income of $89,757. Thankfully our expenses haven't been as extensive as we anticipated. Barring any unexpected expenses, if our expenses continue at the current rate we should finish the year with total expenses of $92,089. For questions about the state of the Parish's finances please contact Gary Davidson or one of the Wardens.

Thought for the week – Humility: A daily dose of our own failure, taken with a glass of patience and understanding, can take us to that place where we can at least begin to love our enemies.

Sermon for Sunday July 15, 2012

Happy middle of July! We're back to summer around here - hot, humid, traveling. We are beginning to take a look at General Convention and the life of our Diocese. No decisions have been made at St. John's or in the Diocese but we will be looking in depth at the outcome of the Convention and our place in the conversation, hopefully as a moderate Parish in the midst. Today's sermon looks at the messy side of the human part of the Human/Divine relationship and how that effects our life in community. Your comments are appreciated.
Peace,

Thought for the week – God: When our theology, our Christian theology, moves beyond describing our own experience of God to prescribing what God may or may not do or be or become, then we have created a God in our own image, a God who is far too small for this very complex world.
