757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

St. John's e-News for Sunday August 25, 2013

Junior Warden – At our last Vestry meeting Kevin volunteered to fulfill the remainder of Joe’s term as Junior Warden, through the end of 2013. Kevin will be soliciting assistance to take care of the physical plant over the coming months and weeks. Please stand by to help as you are able.

Catch the Spirit T-shirts – The t-shirts will be available at church this Sunday. Make checks out to St. John’s for payment. Call Alice if you cannot pick up on Sunday. Order forms are in this bulletin and on the usher’s table in the Narthex.

Annual Crab Feast – At 5:00 pm this Sunday we will have our quarterly Fellowship Meal, the annual Blue Crab Feast. Old and new members are invited to catch up with old friends and meet our new parishioners over a fine feast of Crab and Brats (for those who do not or cannot eat crab). Bring your picking utensils if you have them, there are some available and if you’ve never picked a Blue Crab there will be expert pickers on hand to help navigate the crustacean cleaning.

Second Sundays at St. John’sBeginning September 8 we will host our first (at least during Fr. Ferguson’s tenure) Second Sundays at St. John’s. This program is an invitation to the Diocese and our surrounding community to join us on the second Sunday of the month to experience worship and the history of St. John’s. We will invite people to worship alongside us at 10:30 and/or join us following service and coffee hour to tour the grounds and look at the historic books and literature at St. John’s. Feel free to invite your friends and neighbors to join us for any or all the day’s events. For more information contact the Rector.

5th Saturday at the Salvation Army – August 31st is the 5th Saturday and is our turn to assist serving lunch at the Salvation Army. Contact Terry for more information.

Leaving a Lasting Impression – Would you like to leave your mark on the earth? Maybe your name or the name of loved ones. If you are interested in having an engraved brick in the St. John’s walkway Contact Bernice to let her know you are interested in taking part in the project. The fee is $100.00 per brick and for that you get up to 3 lines with a maximum of 13 characters each line of dedication. If you haven’t noticed them before, they are located within the Trinity Garden area near the Parish House. Take a walk and check them out.

Bishop's Days for Everyone – Bishop's Days 2014 will be held October 12 at Eastern Shore Chapel, Virginia Beach. Our Bishop's Days are a whole new experience - new ways to teach, learn, and share. There are "Ideas Worth Spreading" in Southern Virginia, so we're having our own TED-style conference. The talks are short, but long on inspiration. The day should give you new perspectives, ideas and ways of thinking. If you let it, it could change YOUR world.

Helping the Viola’s – Tony and Marvetta appreciate our prayers and good wishes. They would appreciate and gladly compensate anyone who might have some extra produce from the garden to share with them. Anything you have over and above what you would use would be appreciated. If you have something to share please contact Marvetta at home or on her cell.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in together using a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 71:1-6 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 526, “Let saints on earth in concert sing” (Dundee) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Formation ClassesThis week we will discuss Jeremiah 1:4-10, “Jeremiah’s Call and Commission” from 9:15-10:15 am in the Parish Hall. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading Jeremiah 2:4-13, “God Pleads with Israel to Repent.” All are invited to come together in the Parish Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 am.

Thought for the week – Promise: Whatever challenges God places before you, however hard they may seem, God promises to give us his strength and power to help and support us.
