757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

St. John's e-News for August 11, 2013

National Night Out – Thanks to all who made the National Night Out celebration this past Tuesday evening at the Fire Department a success; this year was the best in the past 3 years.

Sanctuary Roof Update – The Vestry has completed approximately 6 months’ research into the state of the Sanctuary Roof. In that period a number of contractors have been by to survey the roof; to recommend remediation measures; and provide proposals for remediation. On August 14 and 15 there will be a question and answer session regarding the roof followed by a Special Parish Meeting on August 18.
A story board that presents one of the possible options is available in the Parish House, come by and take a look. Likewise there are photographs available that provide details about the state of the Sanctuary Roof in the Church Office.

New Service Music Offering – We will introduce the Sursum Corda, Response, and the Proper Preface using the form in the Hymnal, S120 this Sunday. I invite you to follow along in the hymnal and provide feedback on how the service music suits you.

Leaving a Lasting Impression – Would you like to leave your mark on the earth? Maybe your name or the name of loved ones. If you are interested in having an engraved brick in the St. John’s walkway Contact Bernice at home or talk to her at church on Sunday and let her know you are interested in taking part in the project. The fee is $100.00 per brick and for that you get up to 3 lines with a maximum of 15 characters each line of dedication. If you haven’t noticed them before, they are located within the Trinity Garden area near the Parish House. Take a walk and check them out.

Bishop's Days for Everyone – Bishop's Days 2014 will be held October 12 at Eastern Shore Chapel, Virginia Beach. Our Bishop's Days are a whole new experience - new ways to teach, learn, and share. There are "Ideas Worth Spreading" in Southern Virginia, so we're having our own TED-style conference. The talks are short, but long on inspiration. The day should give you new perspectives, ideas and ways of thinking. If you let it, it could change YOUR world.

Catch the Spirit! – The “new: St. John’s t-shirt will be shown today following the worship service. Ordering information will be available. These shirts will look like the most recent one and are a fantastic way to get people talking about St. John’s. Short sleeve shirts are available for $12 ($14 for XXL and larger) and long sleeve shirts are available for $14 ($16 for XXL and larger). To see a shirt, talk with either Suze or Alice.

The Annual Crab Feast – On Sunday August 25 beginning at 5:00 pm, we will have our quarterly Fellowship Meal, the annual Blue Crab Feast. Old and new members are invited to catch up with old friends and meet our new parishioners over a fine feast of Crab and Brats (for those who do not or cannot eat crab). Bring your picking utensils if you have them, there are some available and if you’ve never picked a Blue Crab there will be expert pickers on hand to help navigate the crustacean cleaning. Beverages will be provided and the cost is still only $10. Contact Marcella at home evenings before 8:00 pm for more information. Sign up forms are available at Church.

Helping the Viola’s – Tony and Marvetta appreciate our prayers and good wishes. They would appreciate and gladly compensate anyone who might have some extra produce from the garden to share with them. Anything you have over and above what you would use would be appreciated. If you have something to share please contact Marvetta at home or on her cell.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in together using a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 50:1-8, 23-24 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 147, “Now let us all with one accord” (Bourbon) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Formation ClassesThis week we will discuss Isaiah 1:1, 10-20, “The Wickedness of Israel” from 9:15-10:15 am in the Parish Hall. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading Isaiah 5:1-7, “The Song of the Unfruitful Vineyard.” All are invited to come together in the Parish Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 am.

Thought for the week – Christ: The person whom we may mistakenly see as the problem may actually be our rescuer, may actually be Christ coming to us in disguise.
