757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

St. John's e-News for Sunday December 9, 2012

Ebenezer UMC Choir Christmas Program – Please join our neighbors at Ebenezer UMC on Bridge Road for their annual Christmas program on Dec. 9th at 3 pm, and Dec. 10th & 11th at 7:00 pm in the Ebenezer Sanctuary. This will be a wonderful way to stop and remember the true meaning of Christmas among all the hustle and bustle that is our lives. Price of admission: one canned-good – Return on your investment: a warm heart.
Wonderful soups, ham rolls and sweets after every performance.

Poinsettias - It is time to place your order for the Christmas poinsettias. The order form is included in the bulletin. The deadline for getting your order in is Dec 16th. Additional order forms will be in the Narthex on the usher’s table.

2013 Pledge Drive – St. John’s 2013 pledge drive is on, pledge cards and a written narrative should have been received. We would like to have all pledge cards in hand no later than this Sunday, December 9, to allow the Vestry to make final decisions about the coming fiscal year. In essence, we anticipate expenses to be approximately equal to this year, approximately $105,000. More details will be available Sunday.

Parish Potluck and Vestry Election – A special thank you to all who participated in the Parish Potluck last Sunday; it was a really blessed event.
Please extend a greeting to the two new Vestry members elected on December 2 who will serve through 2015: Jim and Suze. In January we will bid farewell to Gary and Burr from the Vestry. However, we welcome Gary as he continues as the Parish Treasurer.

Thank you from the Fergusons – Words cannot express our thanks for the outpouring of love and compassion for Kathy and Les following Kathy’s ankle injury and subsequent visit to the ICU with a pulmonary embolism. Kathy is home and recovering but is still weak. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Les and Kathy.

Stewardship – A Prayer for the Mission of the Church (BCP p. 816)
Everliving God, whose will it is that all should come to you through your Son Jesus Christ: Inspire our witness to him, that all may know the power of his forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
AMEN

Our Thanksgivings – We are collecting tangible statements regarding our blessings and thanksgivings in the jar in the Narthex.

Wednesday Morning Book Study – The Wednesday morning book study will take a break until after the New Year. The next meeting will be held January 16 and will include a luncheon. When the group returns it will pick up the study of “The Bible Jesus Read” by Philip Yancy in the chapter on the Psalms. If you are interested please contact Margaret.

Formation ClassesThis coming Sunday we will discuss our Old Testament reading Malachi 3:1-4, “The Coming Messenger” from 9:15-10:15 am. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading Zephaniah 3:14-20, “The Wickedness of Jerusalem.” All are invited to join us for class this Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service available during the education hour.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in unison. We will sing Canticle 16 together. The Canticle will be set to Hymn S248, The Song of Zechariah (Benedictus Dominus Deus) (Plainsong, Tone 8) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found in the hymnal.

Thought for the week – Faith: Faith gives us the power to see life very clearly, to admit that sometimes it seems all wrong and still to know that, somehow, it is all right.
