757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

St. John's e-News for Sunday July 22, 2012

Report from Bishop Hollerith from the 77th General Convention (GC77) – Bishop Holly has sent an electronic note about his impressions of GC77. If you did not receive one you can access a copy of his note at this link. In his note he included an interview specifically addressing the resolution on the blessing of same-gender, life-long covenants. As I mentioned in church last week, I intend to make a presentation on the General Convention and field questions about “what’s next.” in the very near future. Please contact me if you have any specific questions about his letter or how GC77 will affect St. John’s.

Diocesan Connection Newsletter - The July-August edition of the Diocesan Connection is available online at this link. If you would like a print copy please let the office or the Rector know and we’ll get one for you.

Mid-week Work Party - Thank you to all who helped effect repairs to the driveway this morning. I offer a special tip of the hat to Bert, Fred, Jim, and Don for the hot and sweaty work of filling in the ruts in the drive.

Mid-year Pledge Statements – The mid-year pledge statements are available in the Narthex. Please pick up your statement and check it for accuracy. If you find any issues with your statement, please contact the Treasurer.

Christian Formation Offerings – In the coming months be on the lookout for new offerings for Christian Formation. In the later summer we will begin brainstorming what Christian Formation has for us and how the ministry of Formation will continue to evolve in the coming year. We will also attempt to put “flesh on the bones” of a renewed Children’s Christian Formation and the process we will employ to help our young ones to continue their growth in God’s kingdom on earth.

Formation ClassesThis coming Sunday we will discuss our Old Testament reading 2 Samuel 7:1-16, “God’s Covenant with David” from 9:15-10:15 am. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading 2 Samuel 11:1-15, “David Commits Adultery with Bathsheba.” All are invited to join us for class this Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service available during the education hour.

National Night Out – This year’s National Night Out celebration will be held from 6:00-9:00 pm on August 7 at the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department. St. John’s will be an official participant in this year’s celebration and it would be good if we were able to have a contingent present for at least part of the time the celebration is happening.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in unison. We will use a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 89:20-37 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 193, That Easter day (Puer Nobis) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Pastoral Care Volunteers Needed – Have you ever wished you had someone to lend an ear or ease a burden? If so, I encourage you to consider becoming a Pastoral Care provider. There are no special skills required, simply the ability to be present with another member of our church family to ease their burdens. If you feel called to assist please contact the Rector.
We have had a little response and we request you prayerfully consider this ministry. If you have any questions about the ministry contact the Rector.

Mid-year State of Parish Finances - Since we are halfway through the year, the Vestry would like to thank you for your continued support of the ministry and mission of this Church. We would also like to provide the Parish with a mid-year review and update on the year-to-date income and expenses at St. John's.
The Vestry presented a budget with desired income and expected expenses of $104,544. We are currently behind on income and if giving continues at the same rate we should finish the year with an income of $89,757. Thankfully our expenses haven't been as extensive as we anticipated. Barring any unexpected expenses, if our expenses continue at the current rate we should finish the year with total expenses of $92,089. For questions about the state of the Parish's finances please contact Gary Davidson or one of the Wardens.

Thought for the week – Humility: A daily dose of our own failure, taken with a glass of patience and understanding, can take us to that place where we can at least begin to love our enemies.
