757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

St. John's e-News for Sunday July 15, 2012

Parish Delegates and Alternates – Congratulate our Parish Delegates and Alternates who have agreed to serve from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. Our Delegates are Mary-Margaret and Steven; our Alternates are Fred and Marlene.

Mid-year State of Parish Finances - Since we are halfway through the year, the Vestry would like to thank you for your continued support of the ministry and mission of this Church. We would also like to provide the Parish with a mid-year review and update on the year-to-date income and expenses at St. John's.
The Vestry presented a budget with desired income and expected expenses of $104,544. We are currently behind on income and if giving continues at the same rate we should finish the year with an income of $89,757. Thankfully our expenses haven't been as extensive as we anticipated. Barring any unexpected expenses, if our expenses continue at the current rate we should finish the year with total expenses of $92,089. For questions about the state of the Parish's finances please contact Gary or one of the Wardens.

Christian Formation Offerings – In the coming months be on the lookout for new offerings for Christian Formation. In the later summer we will begin brainstorming what Christian Formation has for us and how the ministry of Formation will continue to evolve in the coming year. We will also attempt to put “flesh on the bones” of a renewed Children’s Christian Formation and the process we will employ to help our young ones to continue their growth in God’s kingdom on earth.

Mid-year Pledge Statements – The mid-year pledge statements are available in the Narthex. Please pick up your statement and check it for accuracy. If you find any issues with your statement, please contact the Treasurer.

National Night Out – This year’s National Night Out celebration will be held from 6:00-9:00 pm on August 7 at the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department. St. John’s will be an official participant in this year’s celebration and it would be good if we were able to have a contingent present for at least part of the time the celebration is happening.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in unison. We will use a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 24 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 544, Jesus shall reign (Duke Street) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Formation ClassesThis coming Sunday we will discuss our Old Testament reading 2 Samuel 6:1-19, “David Brings the Ark to Jerusalem” from 9:15-10:15 am. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading 2 Samuel 7:1-14a, “God’s Covenant with David.” All are invited to join us for class this Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service available during the education hour.

Pastoral Care Volunteers Needed – Have you ever wished you had someone to lend an ear or ease a burden? If so, I encourage you to consider becoming a Pastoral Care provider. There are no special skills required, simply the ability to be present with another member of our church family to ease their burdens. If you feel called to assist please contact the Rector.
We have had a little response and we request you prayerfully consider this ministry. If you have any questions about the ministry contact the Rector.

Thought for the week – God: When our theology, our Christian theology, moves beyond describing our own experience of God to prescribing what God may or may not do or be or become, then we have created a God in our own image, a God who is far too small for this very complex world.
