757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

St. John's e-News for May 19 - Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Worship and Potluck – Pentecost is this Sunday. The weather is supposed to be overcast Sunday morning with an overnight low of 61 degrees from Saturday into Sunday. Wear Red in honor of the coming of the Holy Spirit. Chicken will be provided by the Hospitality Committee.

Poison Ivy! – There appears to be a super-abundance of poison ivy on the church property this year. We have found poison ivy vines along the banks of the pond, inside some of the fenced in sections of the graveyard, on the trunks of the trees, and in the back field. Please be careful if you head “overland” and off the beaten path until we can take steps to remove the vines. If you are in doubt about the plant being poison ivy, or not, please ask for assistance.

Vestry Special Election – Due to Joe’s resignation from the Vestry, we will hold a special election to fill the vacancy for the remainder of his term (through 2014). Please prayerfully consider if you are called to serve in this leadership position. For more information contact any Vestry Member, the Rector, or Don.

Church Flowers – The Altar Guild has posted the flower sign-up sheet in the Narthex. Please read the sign-up instructions also posted in the Narthex. If you have any questions, please contact Lynn.

Sanctuary Roof Update – The Vestry is in the process of gathering more recommendations and bids for the Sanctuary Roof. They are inviting a few contractors to ascertain the state of the roof and make a recommendation about retaining the present roof, repairing what is present, or replacing the roof system. We are looking for estimates using a variety of materials to ensure thoroughness while maintaining the integrity of the sanctuary – wood shingles, engineered wood-like shingles, and architectural shingles. Once all recommendations and bids are received the vestry will present the findings to the Parish for information, discussion, and decision making.

Today’s Psalm – We will say the Psalm this Sunday in unison because we will be worshiping at the pond altar.

Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department Fish Fry – The spring Fish Fry fundraiser for the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department will be held on Saturday June 8 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Please come out and support our local all volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. Be on the lookout for more information about the ticket cost and locations to purchase tickets.

Our Thanksgivings – We are collecting tangible statements regarding our blessings and thanksgivings in the jar in the Narthex.

Formation ClassesThis week we will discuss Acts 2:1-21, “’The Coming of the Holy Spirit’ and ‘Peter Addresses the Crowd’” from 9:15-10:15 am in the Parish Hall. Next week’s class will discuss the Old Testament lesson Proverbs 8:1-36, “’The Gifts of Wisdom’ and ‘Wisdom’s Part in Creation’” from 9:15-10:15 am. All are invited to join us for class next Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service available during the education hour.

Thought for the week – Innocence: If Jesus, knowing you even better than you know yourself, were to say to you, “You are innocent,” could you take it in? This is not the adjudication of our innocence but rather the restoration of our innocence. Our being made innocent again by Christ.
