Weekly Welcome – We would like to welcome back John & Ann and
Dianne & BC; it was a blessing to have them worship with us last week. We
were also visited by the children of Paul & Laura Woodward as they visited their
parent’s graves on Sunday. Monday, we were visited by Billie Burgess, a friend
of Lynn Rose, and Ian from Guernsey, UK.

Our Nursery Attendant – Today is Taylor’s last Sunday in the Nursery before returning to Tech. Please stop by and thank her for her service over the summer months. She will return while on breaks from school to sit for us. Next week, we will have a new attendant: Kayla. Please welcome her to the extended St. John’s family.
Bishop’s Days for Parish Leaders – This
year’s topic will be “Enlivening Our Faith for Generations to Come” and will be
held October 27 at Emmanuel, Virginia Beach. This event is NOT
just for Vestry members or Wardens but is intended for parish leaders. Bishop's
Days will offer 14 workshops from which to choose. For complete information
about workshops, schedule, registration and a brochure you can download see the
Diocesan Website at http://diosova.org.
National Night Out – This year’s National Night Out celebration will
be held from 6:00-9:00 pm on August 7 at the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire
Department. St. John’s will be an official participant in this year’s celebration
and it would be good if we were able to have a contingent present for at least
part of the time the celebration is happening.
Stewardship – What is stewardship? In light of our relationship
with God, we have become agents of God’s ministry in the world. Our stewardship
is a reflection of the joy we have in our relationship with God and a means
through which we empower the church and this parish to continue to do God’s
work in our community.
Formation Classes – This coming Sunday we will discuss our Old
Testament reading 2 Samuel 11:26-12:13a, “David Has Uriah Killed” from
9:15-10:15 am. Next week’s class will
discuss our Old Testament reading 2 Samuel 18:5-33, “The Defeat and Death of
Absalom; David Hears of Absalom’s Death; and David Mourns for Absalom.” All are
invited to join us for class this Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service
available during the education hour.
Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in
unison. We will use a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical
Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 51:1-13 together. The Psalm
will be set to Hymn 11, “Awake, my soul” (Morning Hymn) from the
Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.
19th Annual
Crab Feast – We will hold the 19th
Annual Crab Feast on August 26 beginning at 5:00 pm. The cost will be
$10/person. Alternative choices will be available for those who choose not to
or cannot eat crab. Contact Marcella for more information. As always, this
event is envisioned as a Fellowship event rather than a fundraiser; come and
enjoy an evening of food and fellowship.
Christian Formation
Offerings – In the coming months be
on the lookout for new offerings for Christian Formation. In the later summer
we will begin brainstorming what Christian Formation has for us and how the
ministry of Formation will continue to evolve in the coming year. We will also
attempt to put “flesh on the bones” of a renewed Children’s Christian Formation
and the process we will employ to help our young ones to continue their growth
in God’s kingdom on earth.
Thought
for the week – Awe: We can be so dazzled by the heroic and spectacular deeds of the
saints that we forget that we have, within us, the very same thing, this
absolutely ordinary thing we call the love of God.
