757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

St. John's e-News for Sunday August 12, 2012

Stewardship – What is stewardship? Sometimes it is “easier” to say what Stewardship isn’t. Stewardship is our prayer of thanksgiving to God for all the blessings we have in this life; not simply 10% of our time, talent, and treasure. Our stewardship is our loving relationship with our merciful and bountiful creator, redeemer, and sustainer.

Nursery News and Alert – Unfortunately, Seeking Sitters® has had issues beyond their control and there will NOT be a Nursery attendant this week. Our assistant will be ready to serve; however, I invite parents who bring their children to have them join us in Worship as a special treat. Next week, we will have a new attendant: Kayla Baker. Please welcome her to the extended St. John’s family.

Crab Feast – The 10th Annual “18th Anniversary Crab Feast” (you will have to talk to Don to figure that out) will be held Sunday August 26 beginning at 5:00 pm. The cost is $10/person and there will be options besides crab available for non-shellfish eaters. Flyers are available in the Narthex or you can send a check to the Office with the memo “Crab Feast” and the number of people. For more information contact Marcella.

Christian Formation Offerings – In the coming months be on the lookout for new offerings for Christian Formation. In the later summer we will begin brainstorming what Christian Formation has for us and how the ministry of Formation will continue to evolve in the coming year. We will also attempt to put “flesh on the bones” of a renewed Children’s Christian Formation and the process we will employ to help our young ones to continue their growth in God’s kingdom on earth.

Bishop’s Days for Parish Leaders – This year’s topic will be “Enlivening Our Faith for Generations to Come” and will be held October 27 at Emmanuel, Virginia Beach. This event is NOT just for Vestry members or Wardens but is intended for parish leaders. Bishop's Days will offer 14 workshops from which to choose. For complete information about workshops, schedule, registration and a brochure you can download see the Diocesan Website at http://diosova.org.

National Night Out – Thank you to all who attended this year’s National Night Out celebration on August 7 at the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department; it was good to see you there.

Formation ClassesThis coming Sunday we will discuss our Old Testament reading 2 Samuel 18:5-33, “The Defeat and Death of Absalom; David Hears of Absalom’s Death; and David Mourns for Absalom” from 9:15-10:15 am. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading 1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14, “’Death of David’ and ‘Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom’.” All are invited to join us for class this Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service available during the education hour.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in unison. We will use a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 130 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 660, “O Master, let me walk with thee” (Maryton) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

All Saints’ Virginia Beach – Will be holding their annual Church Fair, Saturday Aug. 25th from 8 am – 2 pm. For more information see the flyer in the Narthex.

Thought for the week – Poverty: “I am convinced we have a responsibility, as followers of Christ, to reach out to the poor to learn from them. We must help them however we can. They in turn will help us to see ourselves as we are meant to be, as God sees us.”
