Job Is Humbled and Satisfied

Job’s Friends Are Humiliated

Job’s Fortunes Are Restored Twofold

 

Background: Job is considered the first of the Wisdom books. It has been argued to be the climax of Hebrew Scripture. A central theme of the book is the possibility of “disinterested righteousness” and a secondary theme is innocent suffering. This book of Job does not refer to anything outside itself, thus has no definitive composition date but has patriarchal overtones.

 

Theme: This passage, the last in the book of Job, reports Job’s concession that he was wrong to have demanded an audience with God and that he had overstepped his bounds as a part of Creation. Yet God demands sacrifice from Job’s three friends to atone for their transgression, offered by Job. Finally, we see an accounting of God’s restoration of all Job had before Satan’s attack.

 

Questions to Ponder

* Please read all of Job 42:1-17

* In the opening 6 verses it appears that Job admits his error of demanding an audience with God. Do you think this is the case? What might have caused Job to admit his folly?

* In verse 2, Job states that he (now) knows that God is in charge of all things and cannot be stopped. Do you think that Job now thinks his affliction were right and just in God’s eyes? Why or why not?

* In verse 5, Job realizes that he had only heard God before and now he had actual experience of God’s might and power. Do you think that Job actually saw God in their exchange or might Job finally recognized God’s plan and power over all creation? Does it make a difference in our interpretation of the passage?

* Why might God have singled out Eliphaz as the focus of his anger against the three friends? Do you think Eliphaz was more culpable for the errors of the three friends?

* Why do you think God told Eliphaz to have Job offer the sacrifice and prayer for the friends?

* By all appearances, the friends display Deuteronomistic overtones and Job does not. What might the implication be of the apparent impeachment of the Deuteronomistic proscriptions by having Job offer sacrifice for the friends?

* Verse 10 may imply that Job finally warranted restoration after he prayed and offered sacrifice for his friends. How might Job’s prayer and sacrifice restored Job to relationship with God? Do you think it was essential for Job to make the offering for his restoration? Why or why not?

* Why might Job have been restored double in all things except children once he prayed for his friends? Is there significance in the double repayment?

* For what reason might there be no indication of the mother of Job’s new children?

* What is the hope for us in this passage today?

* What is the application of the story of Job for us today?

Sunday October 21, 2012 - Reflection from worship

Blessings from St. John's on the 3rd Sunday in October. We had a good service with Healing Litany today, like we always do on the 3rd Sunday of the month. It was nice to have a couple visitors from last week return - and bring another family member with them. We also had two other visitors all the way from Virginia Beach near the Lynnhaven Fish House. A blessing to share worship space with visitors again.

We took a short diversion into the book of Job. Today's sermon looked at the impact of asking a question of God. Part of the conversation revolved around the awesomeness of God and the truth of God remaining in connection with us. Job shows us that we can ask questions of God and be assured that God will be in relationship with us even when we question God. I invite your comments.

St. John's e-News for Sunday October 21, 2012

Licensed Lay Volunteers – All are invited to consider how you can help facilitate our worship experience. There are positions in worship that are routinely filled by lay people; in order to share the wealth in this ministry we could use new participants. Some functions require licensing while most do not. And as we reviewed the licensed lay participant roster there are some positions that could use some more volunteers. We only have 1 licensed Worship Leader, Marlene; 3 licensed Eucharistic Visitors (those who can take Eucharist to shut ins), Anne and Leone are licensed through 2013 and Mary Margaret is licensed through the end of the year; and 4 active Chalicists, Terry, Mary Margaret, Jim, and Leone. If you are interested in becoming a lay minister can be obtained from the Rector.

 

Visitors and newcomers – We welcomed Mr. Joe and his son Joe in worship October 14. We also welcome Lillian from Seeking Sitters as our new Nursery attendant. She is the franchise owner’s mother and will sit for us except when Taylor is home from school on break. Stop by and say hello.

 

Stewardship – A Prayer for the Provision of Time and Talent

Father, you breathed life into humanity and gave us various gifts and talents by which to live and move and have our being. Forgive us when we fall into the temptation of thinking that time and talent are made by us. Help us to see that our salaries and our hard work come only because of your provision of life and health and creativity. Help us as we struggle against a culture in which “time is money.” Help us to give ourselves as you did, even unto the cross. May your self-offering be our model and may your love be our encouragement

At Communion – All are welcome to come to the Lord’s Table and all receive the benefits of the Sacrament whether they receive either the bread or wine; both the bread and wine; neither the bread nor wine; or simply a blessing by the priest. To receive the bread, offer your prominently raised hands to the priest so the priest can easily place the bread on the palm of your hand. You can receive the wine either individually or by dipping (intincting) the bread in the chalice; if you wish to receive the chalice, please guide it to your lips. If you desire a blessing as opposed to the elements simply cross your arms across your chest and the priest will bless you. After you have received the Bread and the Wine or the blessing, it is appropriate to say "AMEN."

Wednesday Morning Book Study – The Wednesday morning book study reconvened September 25^th with its study of “The Bible Jesus Read” by Philip Yancy. We will continue the study every Wednesday until the end of December at 10:00 am in the Parish Hall. If you are interested please contact Margaret.

 

Bishop’s Days for Parish Leaders – This year’s topic will be “Enlivening Our Faith for Generations to Come” and will be held October 27 at Emmanuel Church in Virginia Beach. This event is NOT just for Vestry members or Wardens but is intended for parish leaders. Bishop's Days will offer 14 workshops from which to choose. Formation Classes – This coming Sunday we will discuss our Old Testament reading Job 38:1-41 “The Lord Answers Job” from 9:15-10:15 am. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading Job 42:1-17 “Job Is Humbled and Satisfied.” All are invited to join us for class this Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service available during the education hour.

 

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in unison. We will use a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 104:1-9, 25, 37b together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 658, “As long the deer for cooling streams” (Martyrdom) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

 

Fall Working Party – There will be a fall working party to help sort and identify items for disposal that have been found in various locations in the Parish House. So far we have a couple volunteers who are willing to help sort and dispose; if you would like to help please contact the Rector.

 

Thought for the week – Word: If you can recall words that hurt you, you can probably also recall words that sustained you, encouraged you, or lifted you up. Words have power, power to create and power to destroy, power to bless and power to curse, power to heal and power to hurt.

The Lord Answers Job

 

Background: Job is considered the first of the Wisdom books. It has been argued to be the climax of Hebrew Scripture. A central theme of the book is the possibility of “disinterested righteousness” and a secondary theme is innocent suffering. This book of Job does not refer to anything outside itself, thus has no definitive composition date but has patriarchal overtones.

 

Theme: In this passage Job, Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar, and Elihu hear from God regarding their conversations over the preceding chapters. This passage is the opening portion of God’s response to the humans; in it, the reader can detect a bit of sarcasm and almost a biting sense of humor on God’s part. In essence, this passage begins God’s response by God asking the humans “where were you when the world began? And why do you think you have standing to question my (God’s) choices?”

 

Questions to Ponder

* Please read all of Job 38:1-41

* Describe the setting of this passage: what, in general, has taken place until now in Job? Who are main characters in the story so far?

* Why might God be speaking from a whirlwind?

* Although the passage is entitled “The Lord Answers Job” the only reference to Job is in verse 1; in the remainder of the passage there is no specific reference to Job. To whom might God be responding here?

* Given the possibility of the response being to someone besides Job, would it make a difference in the passage if God were replying to Job, one of Job’s friends, or Elihu? Why or why not?

* Why might God’s response be somewhat sarcastic? Many might take offense at a response from God that is biting or possibly disingenuous; do you think that is God’s (or better, the writer’s) intent?

* There are a number of items from creation that are the basis for God’s different questions in his answer. What elements of creation are described in God’s questions? Why might those elements be chosen for this passage?

* Interestingly, God’s questions touch on “the sea” twice (Vv. 8-11, and vv. 16-18). Why might there be two references to the sea in such close proximity?

* Many of the images in God’s questions span the range of helpful/harmful; why might that be the case? What do you think the writers were trying to develop in their comparisons and contrasts?

* Do you think God is ridiculing Job or his friends? How might they be encouraged by God’s commentary and questions?

* How would Israel be given hope in this passage?

* Do you think this passage is descriptive of a Christian’s relationship with God? How might the relationship be different for a Christian and a Jew (since Job and his compatriots are Jewish)?

* What do you see as the good news in this passage? How is or isn’t this passage consistent with our understanding of God as portrayed in the Gospels and New Testament?

* What might the application of this passage be for us at St. John’s and in the Christian Church in the 21^st Century?

Checking in on Sunday October 14, 2012

Greetings friends, neighbors, and visitors. It was a blessed day with plenty of sun and a light dew on the lawn. We were blessed with a new nursery attendant and pray that Lillian enjoys working and serving with our family of children. We also were blessed to welcome two of our neighbors from across King's Highway to worship for the first time. What a blessing and a glimpse of the hope that we have for a future.

It was nice to be back at St. John's after a weekend away serving as a spiritual director for a retreat. We enjoyed the third offering from St. John Singers - the Alleluia Round (arr. by Proulx). We took a look at our life with God as we reflected on the common theme of Job, the Psalmist from Psalm 22, and the Rich Man. We considered what our relationship with God requires of us and how we can be encouraged and blessed as we lay our hearts and souls open to God. Comments are appreciated.

Job Replies: My Complaint Is Bitter

 

Background: Job is considered the first of the Wisdom books. It has been argued to be the climax of Hebrew Scripture. A central theme of the book is the possibility of “disinterested righteousness” and a secondary theme is innocent suffering. This book of Job does not refer to anything outside itself, thus has no definitive composition date but has patriarchal overtones.

 

Theme: In this passage Job replies to his friend Eliphaz. This section is part of a cycle where Job presents an argument and his three friends in turn respond to his argument. Today’s passage falls in the third of three cycles of argument and response.

 

Questions to Ponder

* Identify the setting for (1) the entire book of Job and (2) the section for today. Who are the principles in the story and what has happened to arrive at the conversation in today’s passage?

* Who do you think the “person” is who caused Job’s difficulties?

* Who are Job’s three friends who are in conversation with him?

* In this passage, who do you think the person referred to as “he” or “his” might be?

* Some have said that Job feels that God is absent from his plight even though Job has been an upright person all along. Do you think that is the case given the language in this passage? Why or why not?

* Where do you think Job believes God might be (assuming that God is he/his)?

* Do you think that Job believes he will be able to comprehend God? If so, how might Job understand God? When might Job finally grasp the nature of God?

* Verse 6 might imply that Job believes that God listens to humans, yet this argument does not seem to be consistent with Job’s argument. Do you think that Job thinks that God listens to humans? Why would he believe that God would or would not listen to humans?

* Verses 8 and 9 seem to imply that Job is unable to find God by looking for him. Yet Job seems to continue to look for God. Does it make sense that Job would continue to look for someone that he doesn’t believe is there?

* To whom do you think Job’s statement in verse 12 is made? Is his statement for his benefit? His friend’s benefit? or God’s benefit?

* Do you feel there is irony in Job’s statement in verse 16? Previously, Job seemed to want to see God but this verse seems to imply that if Job were to see God, God’s presence would be completely overwhelming. Do you think this is Job’s point? Why or why not?

* Do you think that Job really wants to see God?

* What would be the importance of Job’s statements in his time (pre-Christ)? What might be the message of Job for our generation?

* How do we apply the message of Job to our situation at St. John’s, individually and as a community?

          While training regarding the sacramental function of these different positions is required the training is not arduous. There is now a requirement for licensed lay leaders in these three positions to have accomplished Child and Adult Safe Church certification. Stewardship – A Prayer for the Provision of Finances

Blessed are you, Lord God of the Universe, for you create out of the cosmos this fragile earth and give life to it. You maintain our lives with the spark of our heartbeat and the growth of food from the earth. How can we do anything but respond by giving back a portion of our blessings to the life and ministry of the Church, your body on earth? Help us to be less afraid of vulnerability and thereby to loosen our death-grip on our money. Help us to see clearly the inequality in our world and to respond by giving through your body, the Church.
