757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

St. John's e-News for Sunday July 21

Helping the Viola’s – Tony and Marvetta appreciate our prayers and good wishes. They would appreciate and gladly compensate anyone who might have some extra produce from the garden to share with them. Anything you have over and above what you would use would be appreciated. If you have something to share please contact Marvetta at home or on her cell.

New Service Music Offering – What are the Sursum Corda and the Proper Preface? Those are parts of the Eucharistic Prayer which can be chanted. Beginning in August we will experiment with singing the Sursum Corda, Response, and the Proper Preface using the form in the Hymnal, S120. We will practice them a few times before the start date.

Welcome to the newest Vestry Member – This past Sunday we announced Kevin’s election and acceptance to fill the vacancy on the Vestry left following Joe’s departure. Kevin will serve the remainder of Joe’s term, until the end of 2014. The Vestry will elect a Junior Warden at its August meeting. Please welcome Kevin and take the opportunity to talk to any of the Vestry members about your ideas, thoughts, or concerns about St. John’s.

Parish Property Projects – There are a number of small projects in the churchyard that could stand some attention. If you are willing and able to “tend the beds” before it gets too hot, please contact the Rector.

St. John’s Nursery – The Vestry has elected to take a break from staffing the nursery for the remainder of the summer. As such, the Seeking Sitter nursery attendant coverage will be away for the remainder of the summer. All children who attend worship are welcome in the service.

Leaving a Lasting Impression – Would you like to leave your mark on the earth? Maybe your name or the name of loved ones. If you are interested in having an engraved brick in the St. John’s walkway Contact Bernice and let her know you are interested in taking part in the project. The fee is $100.00 per brick. If you haven’t noticed them before, they are located within the Trinity Garden area near the Parish House. Take a walk and check them out.

Sanctuary Roof Update – The Vestry has completed approximately 6 months’ research into the state of the Sanctuary Roof. In that period a number of contractors have been by to survey the roof; to recommend remediation measures; and provide proposals for remediation. The Vestry will make a presentation of the findings and recommended solutions to the Parish shortly for information, discussion, and decision making. There are photographs available that provide details about the state of the Sanctuary Roof in the Church Office.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in together using a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 52 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 304, “I come with joy to meet my Lord” (Land of Rest) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Church Flowers – No one has signed up to sponsor flowers for the next two months. Please consider volunteering to provide flowers to beautify our sanctuary during worship. The Altar Guild has posted the flower sign-up sheet in the Narthex. Please read the sign-up instructions also posted in the Narthex. If you have any questions, please contact Lynn.

Our Thanksgivings – We are collecting tangible statements regarding our blessings and thanksgivings in the jar in the Narthex.

Formation ClassesThis week we will discuss Amos 8:1-12, “The Basket of Fruit” from 9:15-10:15 am in the Parish Hall. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading Hosea 1:2-10, “’The Family of Hosea’ and ‘The Restoration of Israel’.” All are invited to come together in the Parish Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 am.

Thought for the week – Humanity: From the destitute and homeless we hear the message that what is to be, is not yet. Our humanity is not complete. Our humanity is incomplete, unfulfilled, until none are left out in the cold. None of us is all we are meant to be until none are left out in the cold.
