757 255-4168 stjohns1755@verizon.net Worship Service: Sundays at 10:30am
Welcome to St. John's community. We are honored to serve Christ, and to open our doors to all. Please feel free to join us for worship. St. John's can trace its history to the founding of Jamestown. The parish is over 350 years old, and the church building itself has stood for 2 and a half centuries. St. John's saw the American Revolution and served as a camp ground for troops during the Civil War. Through it all, St. John's has been a place of worship and a home for those seeking communion with Christ. St. John's has a rich and abiding history. Today, it is as it was... a place to find and be found by Christ.

St. John's e-News for Sunday June 10, 2012

Supply Clergy – During the Rector’s absence, our Sunday worship will be celebrated by the Rev. Ron Spangenberg from Norfolk. He has served at St. John’s in the past but hasn’t served here for a little while. Please give him a warm St. John’s welcome while he is here.

Around the Convocation – We had our Convocation clergy meeting this past Tuesday and there was a good discussion about the things happening in Portsmouth, Suffolk, Franklin, and Smithfield. There has been a request to pray for the churches in our Convocation as many are reflecting on difficult financial and spiritual growth times.

Welcome to our visitors – It was our pleasure to welcome Mike and Bobbi in worship the week of June 3. They have attended St. John’s in the past and are considering making St. John’s their worship home. When they return for worship please give them a warm welcome.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in unison. We will use a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 138 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 25, O gracious light (The Eighth Tune) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

St. John’s Prayer List – Please review the prayer list for accuracy and currency. We will continue to pray for those on the list but would also be blessed to lift them in Thanksgiving once their situation has resolved. If there are any additions or subtractions please contact the Rector or Don in the Parish Office.

Worship Assistants – There are always openings for volunteers to assist with worship. Please prayerfully consider is God is calling you to help as a (1) Eucharistic Minister, (2) Lector, (3) Prayer Leader, (4) Usher, (5) Altar and Flower Guild, and/or (6) Nursery Assistant. There is formal training for Eucharistic Minister and Nursery Assistant. Training can be provided for the other positions as needed. If you feel called to serve please contact the Rector or the Church Office.

Formation ClassesThis coming Sunday we will discuss our Old Testament reading 1 Samuel 8:4-20, 11:14-15, “Israel demands a king and their request is grantedfrom 9:15-10:15 am. Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading 1 Samuel 15:34—16:13, “David Anointed as King.” All are invited to join us for class this Sunday. A reminder; there is nursery service available during the education hour.

Fellowship Hour – We are looking for volunteers to help with the refreshment hour following church. The requirements are relatively easy but this piece of hospitality is something worth doing for our members and visitors.
Please consider assisting with refreshments – anyone can do it. If you have any questions contact Marcella.

Rector’s Vacation and Continuing Education - The Rector will be away for 1 week of continuing education the week of June 18-22. The following 2 weeks he will be away on vacation, returning for worship on July 8.

Pastoral Care Volunteers Needed – Have you ever wished you had someone to lend an ear or ease a burden? If so, I encourage you to consider becoming a Pastoral Care provider. There are no special skills required, simply the ability to be present with another member of our church family to ease their burdens. If you feel called to assist please contact the Rector.
We have had a little response and we request you prayerfully consider this ministry. If you have any questions about the ministry contact the Rector.

Thought for the week – Call: The call of God is always accompanied by the promise of God. God’s answer to our protests of inadequacy and weakness is always the same: “I will be with you.”
