Outreach Food Bag Collection – This Sunday is the day that we would like to have the items for the food bags we are collecting for Stand Up for Kids in conjunction with Perfecting Saints COGIC. We are only looking for individually wrapped food items: fruit cups (pop top), snack size pretzels/chips, canned meat (pop top), soup (pop top), Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, plastic forks and spoons. Items are being collected in the Narthex and will be bagged Sunday the 11^th following service for delivery to Perfecting Saints.

Question for Reflection – You will find cards in the pews this weekend. Please write the answer to this question on the card you pick up in church: Who are 3 people I can tell about the ministry and mission of St. John’s in the coming season of Lent?

Lenten Series and Soup Supper – We will continue our practice of a Lenten Series and Soup Supper beginning at 7:00 pm February 29^th and continuing until the week before Holy Week. We will survey World Religions beginning with Christianity February 29 and continuing with Judaism on March 7. Please come join us for food, fellowship, and education.

Parish Growth Strategy – Burr has agreed to serve as the head of our Parish Growth Committee. He will be contacting members of the Parish to identify the areas where we see potential growth and what actions we can take to achieve that growth. Please prayerfully consider serving on this committee if called.

Our Lenten Worship – During Lent we will celebrate communion using Holy Eucharist Rite I. We will continue to sing the psalm and sing the Trisagion instead of the Gloria. The Trisagion will be the one we “normally” use (or at least the one we used last year).

          We will also have a variety of music offerings from members of the Parish as anthems during the service. If you would like to sing as a member of a small group please contact Roger.

Today’s Psalm – We will sing the portion of the Psalter in unison. We will use a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 22:22-30 in unison. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 147: Now let us all with one accord (Bourbon) from the Hymnal 1982. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Bishop’s Visitation – The Rt. Rev. Holly Hollerith will conduct his first official Visitation since his consecration as our Diocesan Bishop on May 6. While not essential this is an opportunity for Baptism, Confirmation, or Reception in the Episcopal Church. For more information about these rites and being Confirmed or Received in May contact the Rector.

Formation Classes – We will discuss our Old Testament reading Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16, “The Sign of the Covenant” this Sunday from 9:15-10:15 am. Next week will continue our study of the Old Testament Lectionary reading; Exodus 20:1-17, “The Ten Commandments.” All are invited to join us for class.

Wednesday Book Study - Our book study will continue this coming Wednesday, February 29 at 10:00 am and we will discuss Chapter 7, “Where is God When We Fail?” from the book Made for Goodness: And Why This Makes All the Difference by The Most Rev. Desmond Tutu and The Rev. Mpho Tutu. If you would like to participate or have a copy of the book please contact Margaret.

Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16

The Sign of the Covenant

Theme: Today we read an account of the second major covenant between God and humanity. In this covenant God promises to establish Abram’s line forever and in the process renames him to Abraham. God commands Abraham to establish a sign to signify the covenant and remind him and all his descendents of their special favor with God.

Background: This passage falls near the beginning of a section of Genesis subtitled the Abraham Cycle. This cycle is marked by divine covenant, family conflict, and promises of God’s providence – often in the face of overwhelming odds. Prior to this chapter God’s covenant with Abram was recounted in chapter 15 along with the birth of Ishmael while this version is followed by the birth of Isaac.

Questions to Ponder

* Please read Genesis 15:1-21 to compare to this passage.

* Briefly describe the setting of this passage: the time and place in Israel’s history; the principle characters in the story; and the status of God’s creation.

* What are some of the commonalities between chapter 15 and chapter 17? Why might there be two accounts of the same occurrence in Abram’s life?

* Why would Abram and Sarai’s ages be significant enough to have them specifically mentioned in the text?

* What is different between this covenant and the covenant made between God and Noah (chapter 8)? Why might there be the difference between the covenants?

* Why might God describe ‘himself’ as “I am God Almighty [El Shaddai]” to Abram? How is this like the opening of the previous recounting of the Abraham covenant?

* Why would God change Abram and Sarai’s names to Abraham and Sarah? What is the significance of a name in the time of the Patriarchs?

* What are the principles in the covenant: God’s promised action for Abram and Abram’s required action to secure God’s promise?

* In this passage we see another command from God that the Patriarch will “be fruitful and many nations will be made from you.” How is this statement reminiscent of the previous occurrences (Creation and Noah)?

* It can be argued that the unique portions of a covenant are important to its meaning. What are the unique items in this covenant?

* What is the sign that God demands of Abram to signify Abram’s acceptance of the covenant?

* Why might the Lectionary writers pick this passage for the Second Sunday in Lent?

* What are the applications of this passage to us? In our Lenten journey? In our life in our community? As faithful witnesses of Christ?

Greetings on the first Sunday in Lent; we continued our journey in self-reflection and the presence of God in our lives and in our community. We looked at our relationship with God and God’s unconditional love with us as well as our response to that love by sharing the gospel message, “The time has come; the kingdom of heaven is drawn near; repent and return to the Lord.”

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper – A special thanks to Jim and those who worked tirelessly at the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. We grossed $445 this year – better yet, we served food to many members of our community and the greater Tidewater area.

Question for Reflection – What is your rule of life and how will you work during this Lenten season to nourish your vital relationship with God through that rule? How can St. John’s help you in your Lenten journey using your rule of life?

Genesis 9:8-17

The Covenant with Noah

Theme: This passage describes the covenant between God and Noah and all creation that is to come. This passage concludes the restoration of humanity to God in relationship following the flood. This section includes allusions to other portions of the Ancient near East primeval creation mythology.

Background: God has just destroyed all creation except for the family of Noah and the creatures in the ark. God has given rules to Noah regarding killing and has blessed Noah, imploring him to repopulate the earth. In this section of the primordial history, God establishes rules of life in creation and gives assurance that God will never again destroy the world by a flood.

Questions to Ponder

* Describe the setting for this passage; where this passage fits into the story of the Old Testament.

* What has happened that caused God to destroy all creation with a flood?

* What regulations had God enacted that might cause him to generate this covenant with Moses, his sons, and the animals that were in the ark?

* Why might God make a covenant with animals yet make the covenant with Noah?

* Typically, a covenant places requirements on both parties in the covenant; yet in this case, God does not require humans to do anything to receive the benefit of the covenant. What might be the intent of the writer relating this covenant as a unilateral covenant between God and humanity?

* Do you think the rainstorm that created the flood was the first instance of a storm with a rainbow? Why or why not?

* If the rainbow had occurred previously, why would God use a simple symbol as the marker of his covenant with all humanity?

* What might the significance of the rainbow be, especially taking into account the “timing” of a rainbow during a storm?

* How is humanity expected to remember the covenant with God, especially since they have no requirements within the covenant?

* Why might this be read on the first Sunday of Lent? What is the significance of this passage when viewed through the lens of the intent of our Lenten journey?

* How might we apply the principles of this passage and this covenant to our relationship with this church; with our community; and with God?

Greetings at the end of Epiphany; the winter weather warning had an effect on the attendance today but we had 14 in service. Our discussion of the transition from where we’ve been to where we are heading continued. Today’s sermon theme was the dis-ease of transition vs. the comfort of stability. Comments are appreciated.

St. John's e-News for Sunday Feb. 19, 2012 - the Last Sunday after the Epiphany

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper – Shrove Tuesday is this coming Tuesday, February 21; it is time for our Annual Pancake Supper and Offering of the Palms. Please sign up to help and make this a festive experience for our neighbors. Supper will be served from 5:00-7:00 pm. The cost for the Supper will remain the same also: $5 per person or $15 per family of 4 or more. Help spread the word and invite our neighbors to this wonderful celebration.

Diocesan Council Results – At Council the two Canonical Resolutions (C-1 and C-2) regarding definition of Parishes and Missions were ratified. The Constitutional Resolution to reflect changes enacted by passage of Resolution C-1 passed its first reading and will require a second reading next year. Resolution R-1: Petition to the General Convention to study and consider flexibility with the fiscal year of Episcopal dioceses was defeated; Resolution R-2: To allow clergy and congregations in Southern Virginia to participate in the use of trial liturgies that may be approved by the 77^th General Convention for formalizing the blessing of same-gender unions was ratified; affirming existing authority of the Bishop and not granting additional authority; and Resolution R-3: The disposition of the Talbot Hall property and relocation of the Diocesan Center was ratified.

Details can be located on Oakland’s newsletter on the bulletin board in the Parish House.

Thought for the week – Forgiveness: In your relationship with God, do you really believe that you are a forgiven person? What would it be like if you really believed these words, “I will forgive your iniquity, and I will remember your sins no more.” God wills and longs not to remember. We need just to believe it—it can set us free.
